Gustav Adalof Stave Church in Hahnenklee, Germany
If you’re up near the Harz region in northern Germany, make it a point to check out a little sleepy town called Hahnenklee. Once there, you’ll find the stunning Gustav Adalof Stave Church—a replica of a stave church found in Borgund, Norway.
Stave churches are built out of wood (planks or poles, typically, or “staver” in Norwegian), and they were very popular in Norway during the middle ages. This particular stave church in Germany was built in 1907 out of spruce trees, and they still hold regular church services during the week.
The outside of this stave church is breathtaking, but the inside will make your jaw drop. Step inside and it’s like stepping back in time. You’ll find elements of Viking ships (the chandelier is supposedly modeled after a Viking ship’s steering wheel), dragons, and intricate woodworking from the floor all the way to the ceiling.
There’s ample parking nearby (Professor-Mohrmann-Weg 1, 38644 Goslar), and great hikes nearby if you have the time to spare.

More Germany Travel Inspiration to the Harz
Quedlinburg is more than worth a visit. The medieval old town is a declared UNESCO site as is the Schlossberg which contains the castle museum and church.
I had never heard of Wernigerode, but my colleague mentioned that the 12th century town was supposed to be quite nice. Little did I know that by the time we were on the return train to Berlin I would be raving about this town along the German Timber-Frame Road in Sachsen-Anhalt.
The tallest mountain in northern and eastern Germany, the Brocken is a worthwhile hike (or train ride!) and the surrounding area is filled with interesting rock formations.
Perfect for a romantic weekend getaway or just a girls’ trip, Goslar is a picturesque town nestled in the Harz.
Görlitz in Saxony
Normally the bigger cities in Germany like Berlin or Hamburg attract more tourists, but one of our favourite places we visited in Germany in 2021 was Görlitz. It is located in the German Federal State of Saxony and is Germany’s easternmost town. Görlitz has a direct border to Zgorzelec, Poland. You only need to cross a bridge and you are already in a new country with a different language and currency. Görlitz might have big competitors in Saxony, e.g. Dresden, Leipzig or Meißen, but it is still totally worth going there for a visit.
Germany has lots of cute old towns, but Görlitz is one of the prettiest ones. Görlitz has over 4000 heritage buildings, idyllic cobbled streets and squares from all kinds of eras. Görlitz was almost not bombed during WWII and the old town remains original. You find an amazing library, churches, interesting museums about the history of the city and a great train station hall. It’s worth mentioning that Görlitz is a very popular town to make movies (even Hollywood movies). You can visit window displays and filming locations from the Grand Budapest Hotel or The Reader. Görlitz is perfect for a weekend trip and offers great sights to visit or just to bike along river Neiße.

More Germany Travel Inspiration to Saxony
Germany’s best hike is located in Saxony. The Malerweg is an incredible 116 km hike which can be completed in 6-8 days. The hike isn’t just one highlight after another, the entire thing is one long highlight!
25 Hours Hotel in Berlin
One of the best places I visited in Germany recently was the 25 Hours Hotel in Berlin. It’s the opposite side of the city from where I live, so it was a nice change of scenery while not having to go too far away.
The 25 Hours Hotel is a bit of a splurge, but if you can swing it, I think it’s one of the best places to stay in Berlin. It’s a trendy hotel with a hip vibe without being too out there. Located near the Zoo Station and the Bikini Berlin mall, it’s close to lots of restaurants and attractions.
One of the best things about this hotel is the view. From the excellent hotel bar, called Monkey Bar, and from the rooms on the Zoo side of the hotel, you’ll get one of the best views of Berlin from above. This view looks out over the Berlin Zoo and Tiergarten Park, and it is fantastic! We stayed there in mid-October, which was perfect for seeing lots of autumn colors in the park.
It’s also a very dog friendly hotel, and our Yorkie loved gazing out the floor-to-ceiling windows in our room. The hotel provided a big pillow dog bed, dog bowls, and dog treats all to make our dog feel welcome.
Even though we didn’t leave our city, I’m glad we were able to spend some time in a different neighborhood and experience this wonderful hotel.

More active Berlin Adventures for 2022
Berlin is a great base for big bike adventures. Try the Berlin-Copenhagen trail which connects these two capitals. Or there is the Mauerweg which takes you along the border of the former Berlin Wall. You can cycle to the Baltic Sea on the Berlin-Usedom trail, it was my worst bike trip ever, but I’m sure you’ll have a great time!
Triberg im Schwarzwald
Triberg im Schwarzwald is a charming little town located in the Black Forest region of Germany. I highly recommend that you drive there so that you get to see the actual Black Forest and its villages. Coming to Triberg itself, the town is famous for a few things – the first one being the Triberg waterfalls. The waterfall pours down in several tiers and there’s a paved hiking path to go all the way near the top of the waterfalls.
Another one of the best things to do in Triberg is to see the world’s largest cuckoo clock that’s situated on the outskirts of the town. You can even shop for cuckoo clocks at the House of 1000 Clocks. A visit to the Black Forest is incomplete if you haven’t eaten a Black Forest cake, although be warned that the cake comes with alcohol in Germany but you can always ask for one without alcohol. If you have another day or half a day extra, consider taking a day trip to the nearby Lichtenstein castle.

More amazing travel inspiration for Baden-Württemberg in Germany
I might be a bit biased, but Baden-Württemberg is one of my favorite regions to visit in Germany. There are over 100 fun things to do, visit, and explore in Baden-Württemberg. One of my top experiences was hiking the Westweg there through the Black Forest.
Ludwigsburg Schloss Lichtenstein Lichterserenade in Ulm
Alpspitze
Many people love visiting Garmisch while traveling through Bavaria. And for good reason! There is a lot to do and it is simply beautiful! But, while most people flock to the Zugspitze (the tallest mountain in Germany), on our most recent trip to the area while seeing the Summer Solstice Fires (Bergfeuer), we chose to skip the touristy and crowded Zugspitze and hang out on its next door neighbor instead: the Alpspitze. The Alpspitze is just barely smaller than the Zugspitze so it gave just as stunning vistas, had fantastic German food to try at the restaraunt, and all the while was a fraction of the cost of getting to the top of the Zugspitze!
There are plenty of hiking options available as well from difficult and all day hikes all the way to simple and fun for even young kids that only took a few hours! The Gondola rides up are also breathtaking and make getting to the top a cinch. No matter where we travel, we love finding more of the “off the beaten path” gems and I believe we found a fantastic one in the Alpspitze!

Frau Holle Land in northern Hesse
If you’re looking to find the fairytale setting you read about in all of the Grimm Brothers’ stories, then you’ll need to make a visit to Frau Holle Land. It’s exactly what you dream of: half-timbered houses, sleepy villages, castle-throned hills, and quiet country life. It just doesn’t get any more picturesque than this!
Frau Holle Land is not only for dreamers, but for adventurers too. You can cycle from one town to the next on the many river routes or mountain bike down the hills. There are twenty-four Premium Hikes and counting. These trails are well-marked and super hiker friendly. In Frau Holle Land, they have the added specialty of taking you on fantastic geological journeys to mines, sink holes, and extinct volcanoes.
Despite the incredible landscapes, beautiful architecture, and adventure, I have found that the region is grossly underexplored by tourists, making it an excellent off-the-beaten-path choice for those looking for an authentic and active experience in Germany.
