Besides these posts about things I love, here are some fun German videos I really like. Even if you don’t speak German, I think you’ll enjoy most of these films, clips, and commercials!
Supergeil
This video is from Edeka, a supermarket chain in Germany. The word “geil” technically means “horny” but in slang translates to “totally awesome.” The teacher in me thinks that this video would make for an awesome learning activity about adjectives. Anyways, check it out to see all the “totally awesome” things at Edeka!
Rhabarberbarbara
The German language can be quite challenging, but something I love is the long words which when broken down can actually make some sense. This video pokes fun at long German words by creating incredibly long nearly nonsensical words. It tells the story of Barbara, who sells her rhubarb cake at a bar to barbarians, who have beards that need cutting by a barber who likes to drink beer from a bar served by Bärbel.
BVG
BVG is the Berlin transit company. I’m not sure if they actually applied or were just joking about being a World Heritage Site, but in this video BVG makes their case as to why they should be on the same list as the celebrated Taj Mahal and Machu Picchu. In the advertisement, BVG claims to uphold a cultural dialect, characterize the city, maintain proven technology, while having timeless elegant fashion as they move Berliners every day.
iPad
This video is funny even if it didn’t have subtitles. I guess you should think twice before getting Grandpa a new piece of technology.
Rotpunkt
A fantastic movie for any climbing fanatic, Rotpunkt explains the magic of the Frankenjura, a region in northern Bavaria which is rife with challenging rocks. Follow Alex Megos in this feature length film as he gathers the history of the region and where common climbing culture (like hangboards and “redpoint”) came from.
Sie mögen sich
The story of how two people transformed into foxes and what happened afterwards. “Sie mögen sich” means “they like each other.” A colleague shared this fun cartoon love story with me.
